How do we feel about rewriting links to have them target a new window/tab? I
keep accidentally clicking links in my articles and moving away from
Melkjug.

I'm not generally a fan of sites targeting a new window by default.

If I'm playing with filters to fine-tune my jug (or just tinker with
various results), and I click through to a linked site, I don't lose
the adjustments to those filters when I click the back button - at
least, based on my test just now on dev.melkjug.com my filter change
appears to have been preserved.

Unless there are cases where users might lose data by navigating away,
I'd lean towards not opening new windows.

I suppose we could consider that being an account-level preference -
some folks may have very strong feelings on both sides of the "new
window" approach.

We do, however, open the link in a new window when someone clicks the
headline.
This seems asymmetrical. But I understand (and agree with) your argument.

Good catch, Randall. Consider me +1 for consistency. Whatever we
decide, titles and links within the item should probably do the same
thing.

Actually its quite annoying to lose your Melkjug page when you click
on a link. The user might just want to take a quick peek at the
article and go back to their Melkjug reading. I know that Delicious
used to irritate me when it did not open in new tabs. I kept losing
the delicious page that had all the links I wanted to research. Google
has also made that decision out of gmail, you dont loose Gmail when
you move into Cal or Docs or Reader etc.

Just some thoughts to add on here.

I'm pretty biased in favor of *not* opening a new tab/window by
default. That's because 1) I can't stand websites opening new windows
in my browser, and 2) if I want a new tab (which I frequently do), I
can easily choose to open one on my own.

I'll admit, of course, that my browsing methods may not be

My perfrences are not as black and white as yours are. For mail, bookmarks, and rss readers I prefer links to target in new tabs. In other cases I prefer them to target in the current window.

As a default, I certainly agree with this (letting the user decide to
open in a new tab), but also agree that I'm probably not representative.
It's the only thing I use the middle mouse button for.

I'm intrigued by the idea of it being a preference that could be set and
if that's the case then maybe the default should be to open a new tab.
Though obviously this preference is only worth implementing if it's
obvious that it exists as a setting.

Ya this is a repeatedly contested issue. :)

The average user - never holds down the short cut to open in a new
window.
The more than average user (Melkjug) tend to do it after the first
couple of times of making the mistake of just clicking and assuming
they are not going to loose their data that they started off at.

We might want to implement one way and evaluate after it launches. But
going back to Chris and Randal's we need to watch out for consistency
as well as loss of data (settings) etc. when the page reloads.

Yeah... this one is kind of a bikeshed. I disabled open-in-new-window
in the trunk -- I have to agree it's confusing that some things still
open in the same window. I think this is the shortest path to
consistency for now and fairest since there is no "Don't open in new
tab/window" (that I know of). I think the annoyance of navigating
away (accidentally or otherwise) should eventually be solved by making
things considerably faster :)

But going back to Chris and Randal's we need to watch out for
consistency as well as loss of data (settings) etc. when the page
reloads.

I'm pretty biased in favor of *not* opening a new tab/window by
default. That's because 1) I can't stand websites opening new
windows in my browser, and 2) if I want a new tab (which I
frequently do), I can easily choose to open one on my own.
I'll admit, of course, that my browsing methods may not be
representative.

Actually its quite annoying to lose your Melkjug page when you
click on a link. The user might just want to take a quick peek at
the article and go back to their Melkjug reading. I know that
Delicious used to irritate me when it did not open in new tabs. I
kept losing the delicious page that had all the links I wanted to
research. Google has also made that decision out of gmail, you
dont loose Gmail when you move into Cal or Docs or Reader etc.
Just some thoughts to add on here.

Good catch, Randall. Consider me +1 for consistency. Whatever we
decide, titles and links within the item should probably do the
same thing.

We do, however, open the link in a new window when someone
clicks the headline.
This seems asymmetrical. But I understand (and agree with) your argument.
I'm not generally a fan of sites targeting a new window by
default.
If I'm playing with filters to fine-tune my jug (or just tinker
with various results), and I click through to a linked site, I
don't lose the adjustments to those filters when I click the
back button - at least, based on my test just now on
dev.melkjug.com my filter change appears to have been preserved.
Unless there are cases where users might lose data by navigating
away, I'd lean towards not opening new windows.
I suppose we could consider that being an account-level
preference - some folks may have very strong feelings on both
sides of the "new window" approach.
Chris
How do we feel about rewriting links to have them target a new
window/tab? I keep accidentally clicking links in my articles
and moving away from Melkjug.
