Hey,
Pushing this over to the dev list so others can weight in too...
If very low maintenance is key, honestly, you may want to wait for the
0.5.1 buxfig release and/or a major release of CouchDB. I just got
back from vacation, but I know Josh has been wrestling with some
couchdb issues that need ironing out and have to be cleaned up by hand
atm. One of the SQL backends might be an option to start with...
Running multiple independent special interest sites hasn't been a
focus yet, but I think it's an important direction to start heading in
-- so I'm excited to help set up sites like this and hammer out the
problems.
Collaborative filtering isn't even in this release :/ crazy? yes.
We're gather the data but not doing anything with it. Trying to drum
up some users to look at the results it would generate -- targeted as
the main feature of the next major release. In any case, my guess is
it would work well for a special interest group that was reading a lot
of the same stuff.
In the longer run the actual collaborative filtering engine should run
as an independent service anyway, so there could also be the option of
just centralizing collaborative filtering data (or not as you
please)... Different servers should be able to agree on a common name
for articles, user identities would actually be the semi tricky part
to keep straight since they aren't globally unique and you'd want to
prevent impersonation. Probably every participating server would
just need to register for an api key or whatever that it's users and
their data would be bound to.
I'll look into that bug -- filed http://trac.openplans.org/melkjug/ticket/388
if you have stuff to attach in the future.
Thanks again,
- Luke

I'd be interested in getting some help setting it up on our domain.
Do you think it's realistic to put it up and spend relatively little
time on maintenance ? I haven't tried yet.
Also, based on what Josh said it sounded like the collaborative
filtering would work best if this was a centrally hosted
application, but maybe one host per special-interest group is okay
too?
Either way, i'll write about it tonight or tomorrow. A few thousand
people should see it, not sure how many will click through.
